Heating is a big contributor to climate change. Ofgem reckons the average UK household uses over 4 times as much energy as gas compared to electricity.

Hart District Council are pioneering the use of Heat Pumps to reduce the carbon emissions of heating three of their largest building.  They estimate they can reduce carbon emissions by 240 tons per annum by installing heat pumps in The Harlington, Frogmore Leisure Centre, and the Civic Office building in Fleet.  To do so they have just been awarded a £1.6 million grant under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Lib Dem Councillor Richard Quarterman for Yateley East, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Corporate Services, commented to HDC News that: “Our commitment to becoming a carbon neutral council by 2035 is at the forefront of our work and we are always looking for ways to improve our energy efficiency. We’re thrilled to have been successful in our bid for funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

“This funding allows us to invest in more sustainable energy sources for the buildings we own. The project will run alongside other initiatives in our climate change action plan to take us closer to our carbon neutrality goals.”

Hart District Council is jointly administered by the Liberal Democrats in collaboration with Community Campaign Hart.
