Meet Graham Cockarill

A member of the Hart Lib Dems team sat down with Graham to find out more about what motivated him to become a District Councillor.

Tell us a bit about your background

I've lived in Yateley all my life and been a local Councillor for over 20 years. I was educated at Yateley School and Sixth Form, before going to University to read History & Politics. Yateley’s a great place to live, work and grow up; I’m proud of my part in making it that way.

Why did you become a District Councillor for Yateley East?

To carry on being part of the Liberal Democrat Team on Hart District Council that works hard to improve the lives of people in Yateley. We’ve brought in policies, such as no new developments on greenfield sites (ie no planning permission given to build on our countryside), and keep delivering a balanced budget without any cuts to services. In these troubled times of financial hardship created by the previous Conservative administration, this has been a great thing to give to our community.

Why are you a Liberal Democrat?

I believe in ensuring that everyone has a stake in society and has an equal opportunity to fulfill their potential, regardless of background, race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion or sexuality. I believe we should take our responsibilities as custodians of the planet seriously. Your Hart Lib Dems are leading on climate policy, such as solar panels on Hart District Council offices. These have just saved us £30,000 over one year. Amazing! The planet is happier and we can spend that saved money on the people of Hart.

What are some of the issues you are tackling that affect Yateley East?

I am working to improve access to properly affordable housing in the district. I deal with the impact on local people of not having this and having to be put into temporary accommodation. Everyone deserves a roof over their head that gives them dignity.
