The need for SEND reform
On Tuesday (22nd Oct '24), I attended a briefing about Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) hosted by the Local Government Association and County Councils Network. The briefing, presented by the Isos Partnership looked at the reasons why our SEND system is entirely broken. Why putting more and more money in will not fix the problems. And why the funding formula for schools is letting down those in rural areas where costs such as transport are much higher. Despite vast increases in the amount being spent in this area, outcomes are no better.
There is no easy fix. The report recommends a complete review and reform of the system with inclusion at its heart.
SEND continues to be one of my top priorities, as I know how important this is to the people of North East Hampshire, both from my experience in the field, and from the many emails I have received. I will continue to push for change to our system so that it works for everyone.
