Alex Brewer MP's Maiden Speech
Watch our MP for NE Hampshire's first speech in the House of Commons, on 2 September 2024.
The election of Alex Brewer MP to the House of Commons Women and Equalities Select Committee by her fellow MPs is a recognition of the value that her knowledge and understanding will bring to this important role.
Alex has run a Women’s Refuge and held other roles in the charity sector. She has dealt directly with some of the most serious issues encountered by women.
“The Government has a bold ambition to halve violence against women and girls in a decade.
I am proud to be able to use my professional experience to work on the Women and Equalities Select Committee to help advance this aim.”
Alex Brewer
MP for NE Hampshire
This appointment is a sign of the high regard that her colleagues in the House of Commons already hold Alex Brewer. The constituents of NE Hampshire are honoured to have our representative in Parliament chosen for this position.
The Women and Equalities Committee examines the work of the Government Equalities Office (GEO). It holds Government to account on equality law and policy, including the Equality Act 2010 and cross Government activity on equalities. It also scrutinises the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Behind their rather bland and bureaucratic title lie one of the most important components of our democratic system. Select Committees hold the Government to account across the full range of government responsibilities.
Headlines focus on the Punch and Judy confrontations between the government frontbench and the official opposition. The Select Committees in contrast are crossbench organisations where all the major parties in the House of Commons have representation. The members may hold different ideologies, but they are united in wanting to make real improvements to the lives of those affected by government actions. Their work is evidenced based, finding out directly from individuals, professionals, experts, leaders and ministers where the problems lie and which improvements are the most urgent.
Select Committees are not a part of the government, but the government is required to respond to their analysis and recommendations.
